WHAT IS A MAHOUT?
In Southeast Asia, a mahout is an elephant keeper or carer. The word 'mahout' comes from the Hindi words 'mahaut' or 'mahavat', meaning 'keeper of elephants'. Traditionally, mahouts begin their apprenticeships at a very young age, often as children, working with their family.
A mahout's life is entirely dedicated to the care and well-being of their elephant. They are responsible for everything from feeding, washing and medical care. The relationship is based on mutual respect and understanding, and the mahout considers their elephant part of their family.
This deep and unique partnership is central to Thai culture and forms part of Thailand's history of working with elephants.
