Meet Pimpa, the 35-year-old female elephant who is the inspiration behind our new adoption programme. After decades working tirelessly in the tourism industry, she was finally rescued in September 2025. Her rescue was hauntingly unforgettable: a desperately frail malnourished body, lifeless eyes, and a spirit that was utterly broken. She was immediately transported to hospital for urgent veterinary care, where she was treated for severe dehydration and painful digestive complications.
Pimpa's initial arrival at the sanctuary offered little comfort; she was understandably fearful, confused, and lacked all confidence. Introducing her to our resident herd required careful, slow management, as many of the other elephants were simply too worrying for her. Thankfully, she found a true friend in Peanut, a gentle, eight-year-old bull. His joyful, carefree spirit is now helping her to shed the burden of her past and slowly, confidently, learn how to simply be an elephant again.​
